Release Numbering Scheme

As of 2012, DSpace has moved to a new release numbering scheme/format.

Release Numbering Scheme: [major].[minor] (e.g. 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 6.0)

  • Major Releases: incrementing the first number ('major') will represent a new MAJOR release of DSpace. A major release may include any or all of the following: new features, system improvements, architectural changes, bug fixes. All major releases end in ".0", so "5.0", "6.0", and "7.0" would all represent major releases.
  • Minor (Bug-Fix) Releases: incrementing the second number ('minor') will represent a new MINOR release of DSpace. A minor release will only include bug fixes to an existing major release. For example, "5.1" and "5.2" would represent two minor releases which only include bug fixes to the "5.0" major release.

Temporary exception for 7.x Releases:

  • DSpace 7.x is a temporary departure from this release numbering scheme.  Because DSpace 7.x involves recreating the entire User Interface, DSpace Governance chose to allow Minor Releases to include new features only in 7.x. This allowed us to release 7.0 before it included every feature of DSpace 6.x.
  • This means that 7.1 - 7.6 (etc) all included new features. Additional information on the 7.x release schedule & roadmap can be found at DSpace Release 7.0 Status.
  • The 7.6 release was the final release to include new features.  To make that clear, future maintenance / bug fixes to 7.6 will be in 7.6.x releases (7.6.1, 7.6.2, etc).

Release Support Policies

DSpace Committers provide the following support for existing and past releases of the DSpace Software platform

  • Security Updates: Provided for the most recent three (3) major releases of the platform. However, earlier end-of-life dates may be announced if major concerns arise over the stability or longevity of a specific release.
  • Bug Fixes / Patchs: Only provided for the most recent major release of the platform.

Much more information (including how to report security issues or bugs) can be found in our DSpace Software Support Policy.

Future Releases

Version 7.6.2 Status

The 7.6.2 release will be a bug-fix only release to 7.6.x.  Per the Steering Group announcement in April 2023, the 7.6 release is the final 7.x release to include new features.

The release date of 7.6.2 is to be determined and is based on what bugs are found in the 7.6 and 7.6.1 releases.

Version 8.0 Status

Version 8.0 is planned to be released in 2024 (date/month to be determined).  A roadmap of possible features/improvements has not yet been discussed/finalized. When it does, it will appear at DSpace Release 8.0 Status.

Old Version 1.6 DAO prototype - END OF LIFE

Release Date:

NEVER FORMALLY RELEASED / UNSUPPORTED

Notes:

  • I feel this has been placed on hold until we can solidify the 2.0 implementation and begin focusing on porting any usable code from here it the 2.0 branch – Mark Diggory 20:11, 12 February 2009 (EST)
  • This code will need to be ported to either the 1_5_x branch and thus into the "new" 1.6, or else to 2.0, or both. This line of code is unlikely to release independently – Bradley McLean 08:21, 13 April 2009 (EST)
