DSpace/Sakai Integration Projects

Anyone who knows of, or is working on, DSpace/Sakai integration work please add to this page.

Interested Parties

Please add yourself here if you are interested in helping to better integrate DSpace with Sakai, indicate what level of involvement you would like, and perhaps describe a little about your interests/requirements

  • TimDonohue - University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is interested in either developing or taking advantage of better integration between DSpace and Sakai. Currently, we are just beginning to gather our requirements as to what sort of integration we (i.e. our Sakai users) are looking for. In the future, we'd be glad to be involved with helping to develop any sort of connections between DSpace and Sakai that are deemed necessary.
  • ScottYeadon - The Australian National University is a member of the Sakai community and its Sakai installation will require some level of integration with Demetrius (ANU's DSpace-based institutional repository). While no DSpace/Sakai integration work is currently being undertaken at ANU, we will be investigating what development is occurring in this area with a view to support it through early adoption or other means where possible.

Sakai/DSpace roadmap

As part of the DSpace@Cambridge project, Dan Sheppard from the CARET group at Cambridge University has written a white paper describing a roadmap for DSpace and Sakai development so that they interoperate most effectively. Some of that work on Sakai is being undertaken by CARET in the fall of 2006, so that DSpace will be available via the Sakai Resources tool. Sakai 2.1

According to Jeff Kahn (consultant working on OKI at MIT), browsing or searching content in DSpace via Sakai is already available in Sakai 2.1 and above. The "Twin Peaks" option in Sakai 2.1 allows activation of a generic repository OSID implementation for use with a SRU/SRW source. This will work with DSpace if the http://www.oclc.org/research/software/srw/default.htm SRW/SRU software developed by Ralph Levan has been installed (see ). Sakai 2.1 includes a sample tool and servlet allowing a federated search across one or more implementations of the repository OSID and pasting of the results into tools via the HTML area.
Jeff's group is also looking at providing integration via Moodle and Blackboard so additional options may soon be available. They are also looking at using the DSpace LightweightNetworkInterface to allow writing to DSpace from the OSID.
