1st D.C. Area Fedora User Group Meeting

National Agricultural Library, Beltsville, Maryland

5 August 2009, 9:00 am until 4:30 pm

Summary:

The attendees at the June meeting expressed an interest in establishing a local Fedora User Group.  Since several of the potential members were also involved in forming a local chapter of code4lib, they agreed to have a joint meeting of the code4libMDC group and the DC Area Fedora Users Group.  This meeting was held at the National Agricultural Library on Wednesday, August 5, 2009.

Although the presentations were designed to fit the interests of both groups, an emphasis was placed on Fedora.  The morning session started with a demonstration of MARC Edit to convert files to XML formats.  This was followed by an update on Fedora and DuraSpace and a discussion of the DuraCloud project.  Representatives from three local libraries presented information on their Fedora implementations.

Represented Projects

  1. The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Library
  2. The University of Maryland Digital Collections
  3. The National Library of Medicine

The afternoon session was an open format, round table discussion of issues of interest to Fedora users.  Areas of discussion included:

  1. Metadata – creating local schemas, extracting, mining, and crosswalking
  2. Virtual research environments – Islandora, Hydra
  3. RIRI 2009

Next Meeting

Because of the overlap in membership and interest between the two groups It was decided to hold another joint meeting in either mid-November or early in 2010.
