Theme: Benchmarking VIVO

Using standard data sets, standard hardware configurations and standard work mixes, we hope to produce benchmark timings of VIVO performance.  This should help us quantify improvements in VIVO software performance over time, measure the impact of alternate triple stores on performance, and provide assistance to sites looking to improve the performance of their local implementations.  What should be included?  How might benchmarks help your site?  Join the discussion where we hope to explore this topic in detail.

  • What do we measure? initial data load, individual profile, reinferencing?
  • Which data sets should we use, especially to ensure we adequately represent the breadth of VIVO instances?
  • How do we ensure that we are comparing apples to apples over time? i.e., What are the server specs?
  • Whose role is it to perform the benchmarking?
  • At what stage in the development process should we do benchmarking?
  • Where do we store the results?
  • What do we do if benchmarking returns a poor result?

  • Should we perform benchmarking on historical versions of VIVO?
