Meeting Schedule and Attendance

DSpace Developer meetings are a time when Committers and interested Developers can discuss new software features, upcoming releases of DSpace software, and generally plan out the roadmap of DSpace. All meetings are public. We welcome anyone and everyone to attend, speak their opinions or just listen in on the discussions. Please note that we archive all discussions (see Meeting Archives), as a service for those who are unable to attend.

DSpace Developer meetings take place on the following schedule:

  • Every Wednesday at 20:00 UTC/GMT in #duraspace IRC channel
  • All meetings are held for 1 hour (although, admittedly, discussion sometimes extends beyond that)

See the world clock to determine the meeting time where you live. If you are unsure how to connect to IRC, see our list of IRC Resources & Clients

This meeting schedule is also available via the DuraSpace Public Events Calendar (iCal, RSS Feed).

Meeting topics often include:

  • Recent updates on upcoming DSpace releases, bug fixes or features
  • Reviewing of recent reported issues/bugs/feature requests (see JIRA Cleanup Sessions for more info)
  • Occasionally we vote or make decisions on upcoming DSpace technology plans/roadmap (see Developer Voting Procedures for more info)

If you are unable to attend a meeting, please feel free to add your own notes/comments to the meeting's wiki page.

Agenda

SPECIAL TOPICS MEETING

  • Today's Topic: Asynchronous Releases & Trunk Reorganization

Questions For Each of Us to Answer:

  1. What are your responses to each of these ideas/proposals? Do you have questions/concerns, agree/disagree, or have alternative ideas?
  2. Do you support the idea of Asynchronous Releases of various DSpace projects (e.g. releasing one or more projects outside of a formal release like DSpace 1.7.0 or 1.8.0)?
  3. Based on your ideas around questions #1 and #2, do you have any strong opinions on what source code should reside in "DSpace TRUNK" versus in another location in SVN?

Meeting Preparation & References:

  • Both of the above ideas are just initial brainstorms. Other ideas are welcome and encouraged! We don't need to limit ourselves to discussing just these two ideas, rather these may just be starting points to the larger discussion.
  • As a review, current SVN setup of DSpace Source Code is:
    • In SVN Trunk (8 main projects, all released synchronously/together):
      1. dspace-api
      2. dspace-discovery
      3. dspace-jspui
      4. dspace-lni
      5. dspace-oai
      6. dspace-stats
      7. dspace-sword
      8. dspace-xmlui
    • Outside of SVN Trunk, but still included in out-of-the-box DSpace (All have option of being released asynchronously, and all source code is available in the 'modules' area of our SVN.)
      1. dspace-api-lang (Core & JSPUI Language Packs)
      2. dspace-xmlui-lang (XMLUI Language Packs)
      3. dspace-pom (Shared Parent POM)
      4. dspace-geoip (GeoIP support for Statistics)
      5. dspace-services (Service Framework)
      6. dspace-solr (Solr Support for Statistics & Discovery)

General Reminders

  • GSoC General Reminders:
    • New GSoC Mailing Lists this year (shared with Fedora & DuraCloud):
      • duraspace-gsoc : Public list (anyone can join), but mostly for Mentor & Student discussions, public feedback, cross-project collaboration opportunities, etc.
      • duraspace-gsoc-mentors : Private List (Mentors/Admins only) for GSoC administrative purposes only
    • Important Dates (full timeline)
      • May 23: GSoC Begins
      • August 22: GSoC Ends
  • OR11 Reminder: OR11 DSpace Developers Meeting Info at DevMtg 2011-06-06 - OR11 Meeting
    • Please Sign up if you are planning to attend!

Topics in the Waiting...

  • Topics which are still on the "back burner" (which need someone to lead a "Special Topic" meeting around them)
    • Do we want to schedule a meeting to go over proposed Modularization / Refactoring work in near future?
    • Discuss improving how DSpace handles Metadata (From past meetings discussions, this seems popular). Several ideas mentioned recently:
      • Updating to current DCMI standards: DS-805
      • Creating a new "dspace" internal usage schema (for administrative, or non-DC metadata)? Formalize the "dc" schema to be strictly valid QDC/DC?
      • Metadata on all DSpace objects (not just Items)
    • Discuss forming a "Documentation Management Team"? Or reworking our procedures for managing/reviewing/approving Docs on the Wiki.
      • UPDATE: Jeff Trimble will lead a discussion on this in April or May. Still working on date.
    • More discussion of Proposed RoadMap to 2.0 before OR11
      • In meantime, feel free to forward thoughts on to Tim or everyone (via dspace-devel or dspace-commit).
