DSpace 7 Update

The DSpace Steering Group is discussing whether to potentially expand the scope of DSpace 7 to include more new features such as support for storing things like Authors (to create Author Profile pages, like Bepress, etc), and some other objects that tend to be more CRIS-oriented.These ongoing discussions may mean that DSpace 7 is not *just* a new UI on existing features–what we have been focusing on for "What's in DSpace 7".

The Steering Group has another meeting scheduled to discuss further and work towards making a decision–not sure when this decision will be made. We might want to hold off on publishing "What's in DSpace 7" until this discussion completes --- we can still finalize the document, but may want to just hold it aside.

DSpace 7 Update

  • DSpace entities working group has been analyzing emerging communityneeds with regard to OpenAire Guidlines (strict about identifiers, enhanced needs), COAR Next Generation repositories report, and  Bepress around author profiles, (Need for DSpace to be more competitive–needs among all three are parallel. How can DSpace manage entities other than documents/files ? Steering Group is discussing how/if entities can be configured in DSpace 7. Additional institutional resources to accomplish this may be possible. Note that we are not trying to make DSpace more complex–support additional use cases. Coud disable entities.
  • Managing other entities will allow institutions tocomply with funder reporting requirements.
  • API entity exposurewill allow for more integrated systems. Not trying to make DSpace more complex–support additional use cases. Coud disable.
  • This group thinks this is great news
  • DSpace CRIS in main code? Implementation details are outstanding. Not everyone wants this.
  • In process of planning community sprints to help out on the code, finalized by Summit, first in May. Looking for potential developers. Some DSpace familiarity required, not a lot. More details by April 10.
