In order to back up DSpace to DuraCloud:

Determine the version of DSpace that you are running

For DSpace 1.8.0 and above

For users running DSpace 1.8.x or above, the "Replication Task Suite" add-on is available and provides the ability to perform backups and restores easily via the DSpace Administrative User Interface. For further information regarding how to download and install the add-on, please visit the Replication Task Suite documentation. Also, the following screencast demonstrates the Replication Task Suite add-on and how to begin using it with DSpace 1.8.x

For DSpace 1.7.x

For users running DSpace 1.7.0-1.7.2, may wish to use the "AIP Backup and Restore" tools to backup all DSpace objects to a set of AIPs (Archival Information Packages). This set of tools provides you with the added flexibility of being able to backup/restore/replace individual DSpace Items, Collections or Communities. Please note that the AIP Backup and Restore tools are run at the command line and generate AIP packages locally. These packages can then be transferred to DuraCloud via the DuraCloud synchronization or upload tools. For further information regarding how to use the DSpace tools, please visit the AIP Backup and Restore documentation. To download the DuraCloud synchronization or upload tools, please visit the DuraCloud documentation.

If you do not wish to utilize the "AIP Backup and Restore" tools, you may also choose to perform a full DSpace system backup (database and files) as described below.

For DSpace 1.0.x - 1.6.x

Prior to DSpace 1.7, all DSpace system backups required a two-pronged approach (this approach may still be used in modern versions of DSpace as well)

  1. Backup the entire database (by exporting it to a file), AND
  2. Backup all the files and configurations in the DSpace installation directory

Therefore, backing up older versions of DSpace requires storing both the database backup (#1) and the files/configuration backup (#2) in DuraCloud. Because the database backups are a full database copy, there is no easy way to restore individual DSpace Items, Collections or Communities. However, full system backups and restores may be easily conducted through the use of DuraCloud synchronization and retrieval tools. In order to perform a full system backup of DSpace, please see the database and bitsteam store backup details in the Storage Layer section of the DSpace Documentation. To download the DuraCloud synchronization or retrieval tools, please visit the DuraCloud documentation.
