Update on VIVO Searchlight
Miles Worthington, winner of the 2011 VIVO Apps contest, is visiting Cornell for a few days and will talk briefly about an update to his award-winning VIVO Searchlight bookmarklet as a tool supporting AgriVIVO. Here's a summary with a pointer to the code and documentation.
VIVO 1.6
Question
- Should we disable "extended linked data" in VIVO 1.6? VIVO currently returns more than the minimum set of RDF in response to a linked data request, on the theory that by returning additional labels and/or the URIs and labels of entities related via an intermediate relationship like a position or authorship that the application receiving the response may be able to make fewer secondary requests. We are no longer sure this approach makes sense – it may be less stress on a VIVO and on the application requesting linked data to get smaller amounts of data in multiple requests. We have also found in harvesting large amounts of data for the VIVO multisite search that the same data ends up being requested and returned multiple times.
- The question is: does anybody have an application or process that depends on VIVO's extended linked data feature?
- there may be a bug in the feature that causes a linked data response to include more than we intended -- if it’s just currently broken, perhaps we should just fix it to perform properly
- VIVO 1.6 release standup meetings are happening every weekday noon (excepting Labor Day 9/2)– open to all, but likely primarily of interest to those committing code for this release
- For background, see the VIVO 1.6 release planning (including notes from last week's version number discussion) and VIVO 1.6 JIRA issues
Updates
merging in notable list traffic? so we can associate list issues with what is going on at each institution
Weill Cornell (Paul, Eliza) -- Paul will be joining Alex in leading the Implementation working group and these calls in coming weeks. Eliza has been working on the sorting of publications using JQuery tinySortPlugin -- to give users the option to sort publications by author, journal type, journal name, citation count, etc. Will be able to do a demo soon --
Virginia Tech (Julie) -- at the early stages of a pilot project still, and have been meeting with central IT to help installation and configuration on a virtual server. Will also be hiring a systems engineer to help in populating the profiles and with the ontology. Will be having conversations with data stewards and with researchers. Looking forward to have contributions to future discussions on these calls.
UF (Nicholas) -- more testing this week of new person ingest software, moving toward productionization
UCSF (Eric) -- working on an ORNG Open Social gadget for researchers that have a large number of publications to let them select which ones will appear. Are also looking to Knode (http://knodeinc.com) to help provide a hyperlink out for non-UCSF authors, which would then link to their home page wherever that may be.
UCLA -- had a question on the list about the Harvester
Texas A&M -- has been in touchwith the Colorado team
Stony Brook (Tammy) -- d oingS data updates on the SUNY Reach siteVIVO Stony Brook meeting next week regarding grants data.
Scripps (Michaeleen) -- no particular updates this week
RPI (Patrick West)
Continuing Integration between Drupal, VIVO, and CKAN
Migrating content from Drupal (users, organizations, groups) to VIVO
Single Signon issues between the three environments (GeoPass? OpenID? Drupal?)
NYU (Yin) -- still interested in a Vagrant VM since finds himself reinstalling frequently as computing environment changes -- he’ll follow up with ChrisB about Vagrant and the new Tools & Apps WG (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/VIVO/Apps+and+Tools+Working+Group)
Memorial (Max) -- working with graphic designers, and testing ingest with the Harvester after first working with the Jena models and the VIVO ingest menu
EPA (Laura, Cristina, Zac) -- finishing up implementing the Digital Vita Doc functionality on their instance, and heard from someone with the Smithsonian Libraries who has also been in touch with the USDA about implementing VIVO
Duke (Richard, Patrick)
Cornell (Jon, BrianL, BrianC, Tim, Huda, Miles) -- still working toward the 1.6 release; will be helpful to have people submit data to test data migration and then to test release candidates
Colorado (Stephen, Alex) -- focused on Elements publications curation for 2013 annual faculty reporting cycle with our VIVO devs, FIS staff and grad students. Stephen has been also working on 1.6 preparations including our use of Harvester for daily data ingests.
