I attended the Campus Technologies 2016 (http://www.campustechnologyconferences.com/) conference as a guest of Daniel Hook of Digital Science. It is a professional conference for CIOs and IT directors of universities and colleges.
"Speakable and unspeakable in research data sharing" The panel included Daniel Hook as moderator, Laurel Haack of ORCiD, and myself speaking on the topic of research data sharing. Daniel spoke of the position of universities with respect to data sharing -- some unaware of changing landscape, some considering changes to cope with data management and sharing, and some in leadership positions. Laurel spoke of identifiers and of the need for culture changes across academic activities to reward, encourage and require sharing. I spoke of the perspective of faculty, caught in a grant-funded system that encourages competition, with intellectual property and security policies that discourage sharing, and biomedical research in which sharing is fundamentally problematic. The attendees participated asking questions about tools and policies and the role of the faculty.
