Opening Remarks

Funders spend $1.6 trillion worldwide, annually on research.  Important for them to know the impact research is having. (MC: Note the confusion regarding the purpose of research – research is for learning about the physical world.  Translation is for moving research results into practice and is not typically done by researchers.  Translation is done by care givers (medicine), policy makers, extension (agriculture) and companies through tech transfer (pharmaceuticals, engineering).  For funding agencies to hold researchers accountable for impact is quite strange, unless the research specifically is specifically about how to create impact or how to increase impact.  Studies to create impact are typically not research – they are contracts to provide training or incentives for making changes related to research findings.)

Challenges for the representing scholarship

  1. Thinking between the boxes
  2. Patience for collaborative work
  3. Over complicating the solution
  4. Discounting neutral governance
  5. Too narrow definition of standards

Closing Keynote

Paul Wouters. Leiden

Four main problems in academic research system

  1. Funding. Level. Project v Infrastructure. Blue sky v. Focused.  Research v. Teaching. 1 size for all?
  2. Career. PhDs and postdocs as cheap labor. Hyper competition. Emerging separation between teaching and research. Lack of diversity.
  3. Publication. Hugely successful. Public. Huge money. Publishing for the smallest audience. Quality control.
  4. Evaluation. Built on publication system. Evaluations are liminal.  Micro quality v macro quality. Create accountability.

Increased bibliometrics. Increased self assessment. Alt metrics.

Leiden ranking. CWTS advanced analytics. Rodrigo Costas. Spider graphs for multi factor comparisons
