Agenda

  • Updates, issues, questions or feedback from sites
    • UNT working with mapping data into VIVO, looking at ontology, middle-layer relational DB. Finding visual diagrams very useful.
    • Question about linking to external controlled vocabularies. Could UNT encourage faculty reporting tool to use controlled vocabularies. VIVO community might be able to build services to serve controlled vocabularies for some domains (e.g.organizations, journals). VIVO as a community could be helpful in articulating the issues around controlled vocabularies. Demonstrated the 1.4 interface for accessing/choosing from a controlled vocabulary. Seems to be only returning a single term at this time. Jon investigating Duraspace as a way for the VIVO effort to provide controlled vocabulary/instance services that are not tied to a particular institution.
    • Would like to be able to represent who can teach a course (course not in the sense of an event happening at a specific place and time).
    • Colorado - OCLC ? What topics would be useful at the implementation fest at University of Colorado in May, and which track (policy or implementation) would they be in?
  • How to represent deceased people (UF)
    • will be doing another ingest from peoplesoft tomorrow. some people are marked deceased with boolean flag in the input data but UF would still like to import data about those people (such as the inventor of gatorade). We discussed DateTimeInterval associated with a person, with subproperties of start and end called birthDate and endDate. You may know a person is dead but not know the date of it, and so we did not go with recommending that option (my comment now: we could make a subclass of DateTimeInterval with a cardinality restriction of 1 on end to indicate that there is an end but we don't know what it is). We also discussed a datatype property with a boolean value and a Class approach. UF will introduce a direct subclass of Person, DeceasedPerson and additionally assert that when needed.
  • How to store privacy flags (UF)
    • we didn't get to this topic. Nicholas will implement and we will discuss it next time.
  • Representing languages spoken ( VIVOONT-250 )
    • lexvo and lingvo seem like the way to go. Additionally note that Oxford library may be using these.
