Updates

Weill Cornell

  • Hunter colleagues have brought up VIVO
  • focus on VIVO book chapter
  • working with people listed in multiple VIVOs
  • FYI: migrating VIVO from Solaris Sparc to Intel server (due to chip-level multithreading issue) – more info in their book chapter

UF

  • finished course ingest 3-4 years of course data in VIVO
  • working on people harvest (open source Java SOAP server based on Apache Axis with listener that will receive live updates from UF enterprise folks) on GitHub will be very generic – listener drops files into a directory where automated Harvester can process them
  • Harvester extensions – building a generic "file harvester"

Cornell

  • another version of PeopleSoft people ingest via CSV ETL, using an intermediate db to mirror CSV and then convert from there to RDF
  • continuing major effort to cleanup data in VIVO from Activity Insight and other data issues, e.g. publication with no authors with web UI tool to view and act on these data exceptions – separate web apps from main VIVO app

U North Texas

  • Exploring Web of Science data (less data, better quality), how that compares with Zotero which allows them to download batches of Google Scholar citation data (more data, more filtering required) – trying to download too much data from causes Google to block requests, re-using some UF code related to Bibutils command line conversion from BIBTEX to MODS than Harvester can ingest

Colorado

  • Implementation Fest planning
  • VIVO Chapter 3 & 4 chapter contributions
  • Department and affiliations data ingest

Special Topics

  • Some discussion around around advantages and disadvantages of interactive/monolithic application as compared to a component/Unix toolkit. Is VIVO "the application" reaching a threshold level where we can't add more features?
    • Meta use cases discussion – what are you using VIVO for? Trace so when VIVO "Swiss Army Knife" is handed to someone knew, the meta use cases are more apparent.
    • Some ground work for this laid in VIVO 1.3 – these use cases could be built out to leverage this in future VIVO releases, e.g. VIVO "lite" for 60+ CTSA awardees (or CTSC consortia as in Weill's case) that gets you a VIVO "core" implementation.
    • UNT's School of Info idea to use VIVO in the instruction for students
    • express this on Ideascale at the meta level (meta use cases) versus specific modes?
  • VIVO 2012 Implementation Fest at University of Colorado Boulder, May 14-16 – draft schedule online, registration open
    • event page
    • online registration
    • draft schedule – if you are attending or considering it, let us know what you think of the planned sessions and schedule
    • Can you attend? Do you know someone we should invite to Implementation Fest who is not already on this call or the vivo-imp-issues mailing list?

Other topics TBD
