Agenda:

Darrell Gunter of Gunter Media Services is presenting his ideas for the "VIVO Community Involvement Program." Darrell is an adjunct facutly member at Seton Hall University. He put together a slideshow for us (see below).

Darrell explained that every institution's goals are different, and it's important to get representatives from all aspects of the university, all populations that are involved. Looking at the critical path, key stakeholders must be involved for making the project a success. How will we measure success, what's a successful CIP? What are the communication tools to help implement and monitor the program? How will the plan be implemented – how do you make sure that you're working within your own institution's culture.

Advisors (consultants) like Darrell can help by tweaking your current plans and helping with known obstacles, including tips like these:

  • Keep your meetings short.
  • White board sessions with team really help bring a lot of ideas to the table. You will refine the plan as you go.
  • Weekly communication promotes every success.
  • Establish an objective
  • Establish a team
  • Implement the FIRST strategy
  • Promote every success.

How do we reach faculty members who don't read their email? Find someone who is very innovate, who can demonstrate the success of the program, to work out a case studies. Also find the director of research, the chairs, the deans to make sure that VIVO is being discussed. What other ways to communicate with them? Remember that our systems needs to have other information that brings value to you.

Faculty also like speakers, especially on an important topic, something that interests them.

How do we measure success? What does success look like?

People don't know what they don't know -- they need to be educated so that they recognize that this is an area that they should be involved in and become expert in.

Use basic metrics: achieve basic level and then go to the next level. EG, Track A might be 50% of faculty editing, then 75%, and 100%. Then Track B, how often do they use the system and how much time are they on the system? Track C: what types of activities to truly collaborate? Are they communicating with people? Nirvana is when someone has written a grant application using a collaborator found with your

What advice do you have for us?

Darrell thinks we are doing so much good for global research community, and we have so much great information. But the world doesn't know about us. VIVO is the good guys. It's a matter of taking our message out and making it available to everyone.

Darrell suggested an arrangement with the VIVO project would provide help and suggestions to the community at large.
