Sunita (Washington University) and Paul (Weill) discussed how in their source grant data the same grant shows up multiple times for different time periods in the case of grants that get renewed. Whether the ontology needs to account for this is a topic for a future call. Sunita also mentioned spin-off or sub-grants which have the same id but with a different suffix and a different PI from the main grant, and it's not clear whether the current ontology can be used to model this satisfactorily.
When the question was posed to the NIH RePORTER help line, we received simply the following reply:
- Sub-projects are a sub-set of the main project, and are funded by the main project.
