We, at VIVO, want to take a moment and personally thank you for your continued and generous support of our program and community. It is because of the support of our member institutions that open technologies, like us, can continue to provide access to our collective educational, scientific, and cultural materials. Your financial support ensures that we can continue delivering the VIVO application to its worldwide user-base and grow and expand the thriving community behind it. As a VIVO Member you have a voice in ensuring that we can serve the global communities that depend on our software to protect, preserve, share and make available  the priceless content contained within their institutions now and into the future.

As you know, VIVO is part of Lyrasis, a technology nonprofit that is home to five open source software communities. By being a part of Lyrasis, VIVO is able to leverage cost savings via shared infrastructure, new staff and expertise with a larger team, and increased investments in development and outreach.

The membership invoicing process started and our Membership team is following up to confirm your details. Even though your invoice will arrive shortly, all of your 2023-2024 membership benefits will continue through June 30 and the new term will start on July 1, just as always.

Membership represents VIVO's main source of unrestricted income and provides essential support for our staff and operations. If you would like to have a conversation about your VIVO membership renewal, or have any concerns about continuing your membership, please contact us at membership@lyrasis.org. We're here to help. We look forward to working with you during the upcoming membership year.

The high-level summary below describes some of the accomplishments made possible by your membership contribution, as well as what you can expect in the coming year. If you missed it, please see previous Annual Reports and our 2023 report should be out soon. These reports  highlight more exciting things that your membership dollars helped to accomplish.

VIVO FY 2024 Activities Supported by Membership

VIVO 1.14.0, a minor release that includes the following new features:

  • Prior to this minor release, adding a new user interface language required changes in VIVO-languages and Vitro-languages projects in different directories for web application property files and for data which should be preserved in graph. Moreover, it required changes of several Maven specific files (pom.xml), meaning it required a technical person included in the process of adding new language. Starting from the VIVO 1.14.0, adding of new language can be performed by a translator requiring only a basic knowledge of the ontology notation. The VIVO-languages and Vitro-languages projects are not needed anymore for the installation of VIVO (or Vitro).
  • The operations of loading and removing sample data, adding and removing model, clearing statements have been improved more than 5 times compared to VIVO 1.13.0 and prior versions.
  • In addition to supporting faux object properties, VIVO from 1.14.0 also supports faux data properties.
  • Miscellaneous improvements and bug fixes - find the list of fixed bugs at Fixed bugs in the VIVO 1.14.0 release.

Many opportunities to connect with fellow VIVO users in person and online:

  • Integration of VIVO and ORCID
  • Improving user interface by making VIVO’s themes responsive and aligned with WCAG
  • Improvements of performance with external graph storage and ingesting data
  • Publishing of minor releases in July 2024 (VIVO 1.15), and hopefully in March 2025 (VIVO 1.16)

Moving forward a Leadership Group discussion on the “VIVO in a Box” concept. Planning to ask different communities for feedback on this idea to identify possible next steps.
